Whether this is your first year teaching science or you’ve guided students for years, this Unit is designed to support you as you lead your students through a profound and unforgettable learning experience.

Welcome to the Homo Sapiens Unit, part of the LabLearner Human Experience Series. This Unit provides a unique opportunity for students to explore human life from the moment of conception through the stages of prenatal development through hands-on lab work, critical thinking, and deep reflection.

Investigation 1 - Human Evolution

In Investigation One, students will study how humans evolved along with other plants and animals on planet Earth. During this Investigation, they will perform experiments aimed at understanding how Homo sapiens drastically differentiated themselves from all previous and subsequent species with the expansion of their cranial volume and highly developed cerebral cortex.

Investigation 2 - The Human Life Cycle

In Investigation Two, picking up from where they left off in the Human Prenatal Development unit, students will study the key biological, cognitive, and behavioral changes that occur during a human life span.

Investigation 3 - Adolescence!

In Investigation Three, students will continue their study of the human life cycle by focusing specifically on one of its most important stages: adolescence. During this Investigation, students will study:

  • Peer Pressure
  • Executive Functions…frontal lobe maturation
  • Hormonal physiology
  • Emotional/behavioral maturation

Investigation 4 - Opportunities and Responsibilities

In Investigation Four, students will learn about the many STEM careers available if they study. During this Investigation, students will discuss how science creates wonderful opportunities to make the world better for all human and non-human life. However, with learning and opportunity comes a responsibility to use scientific knowledge and skills to help mankind now and in the future.

Human responsibility for:

  • the planet (pollution, climate, etc.)
  • protecting life
  • hunger and poverty
  • curing sickness
